Leo and Me

This wasn't a competition but rather a composition lesson. I drew my pictures, and he would sketch them in a different point of view.

All photos can be enlarged. Click to View.

Story: Hannah went to the temple to pray to G-d to give her a child, but the priest never heard words coming from her mouth and assumed she was an adultress... G-d heard her prayers, and she promised to become a nazarite (not cutting hair, refraining from wine etc)... and after the boy was old enough to separate she took him to the temple where he became the prophet Samuel.

Story: One of our laws indicated that the corners of the fields should be left for the poor.

Golden Pheasant Sketches

The Golden Pheasant
(Courtesy of Google images)
We actually used a sculpture.

Heather's Pheasant

Pencil. And the shadows from myself and the darker room make the white paper look different.

Leonid's Pheasant Sculpture

Same thing, the lighting was not perfect which made the white paper seem darker.

Perspective Study

Architectural. Not my favorite. I don't know why I feel that way, but I suspect that it has a lot to do with the lines. I prefer drawings with curves over straight lines. Absolutes bother me because I like the freedom to interpret what I see. I feel confined when I see shapes that are geometric or tall square buildings.

I would be happier to do architectural drawings or painting if the buildings were softened, and they weren't high-rise buildings. Those aren't very interesting to me. What is interesting is a house with character, or a building off in the woods, something where I can imagine a story in my mind.

I wasn't that excited to do this drawing tonight. But, after I began I enjoyed it. The game was to challenge myself and see if I could do it perfectly. When I look above and see the drawing in a photograph I see imperfections (which is fine), for example:

1. The top of the box, slight curve in the middle of the line.
2. The top of the cup is a little to high on the right side.
3. The octogon in the back is a little too high, it needed to be flat across the top, and the bottom.

My favorite part was finding the shadows.

As for the other two drawings of the same objects....   well, I'm not so thrilled with what I did so I didn't take any pictures. Isn't that great? (smile) I'd prefer not to look at something with a million erased lines on the paper.

Trumpet and Cello

This is the cello. I think the idea at the time was to manipulate the shape of a cello and infuse it what what a human posture would be. A cello playing it-self, holding the bow across the strings. It was difficult to get a good picture because it was done with pencil.

The idea with this trumpet came when I was thinking of jazz trumpeters and the FIRE they create through the music they make on their horn. I imagined what the sound would look like if you could see it come out of the bell.
